Kitchen Cabinet Painting in Montgomery County, PA: What to Expect

September 26, 2026•3 min read

Short answer: painting kitchen cabinets is one of the most affordable ways to update a kitchen, and in most Montgomery County homes it's done without tearing anything out. The finish lasts when the prep is right: thorough degreasing, sanding, a bonding primer, and a durable cabinet-grade paint. Here's what the process looks like with Gwyn & Sons.

Is painting cabinets worth it compared to replacing them?

If your cabinet boxes and doors are solid and you like the layout, painting usually makes sense. You keep your countertops, plumbing and backsplash in place and change the look of the whole room. If the boxes are water-damaged, sagging or falling apart, paint won't fix that, and we'll tell you so at the estimate.

What does the cabinet painting process involve?

  1. Protect the kitchen. We cover countertops, floors and appliances and set up a clean work area.

  2. Remove doors, drawers and hardware. Everything is labeled so it goes back exactly where it came from.

  3. Clean and degrease. Kitchen cabinets carry years of cooking grease. Paint won't stick to it, so this step matters more than any other.

  4. Sand and repair. We scuff-sand the surfaces, fill dings and gaps, and sand again for a smooth base.

  5. Prime. A bonding primer grips glossy factory finishes and blocks wood tannins from bleeding through.

  6. Paint. Multiple coats of a hard-curing cabinet paint, with drying time between coats.

  7. Reinstall. Doors, drawers and hardware go back on, adjusted so everything closes cleanly.

Real job: a built-in desk and window seats

This room had a full wall of built-ins in a Montgomery County home: a desk hutch with glass doors, plus window-seat drawers wrapping two walls, all finished in a tired pink.

We pulled and labeled every drawer front, then sanded and primed them off the cabinets so every edge got coated.

The cabinet boxes were painted in place, and everything was finished in a clean white next to a deep green accent wall. Same cabinets, completely different room.

How long does it take?

It depends on the size of the kitchen, the number of doors and drawers, and the condition of the existing finish. We give you a timeline with your estimate so you can plan around it. Keep in mind that paint feels dry quickly but keeps hardening for a while afterward, so go easy on the doors for the first few weeks.

Can you change the color completely?

Yes. Dark wood to white, oak to a deep green or navy, two-tone uppers and lowers are all common. We'll talk through colors and sheen with you before any paint is opened.

How do I care for painted cabinets?

Wipe them with a soft cloth and mild soap and water. Skip abrasive pads and harsh cleaners. Wipe up spills near the sink and dishwasher quickly. Small chips can be touched up.
